Confirmation was given by the Junta de Andalucía this month for plans to create a new hospital to serve the residents of Mijas and Fuengirola. "We are on the right track, and in our first meeting we have set the foundations for the project’s vision based on current needs," said Health Minister Aquilino Alonso in a press conference.
He went on to confirm that the regional administration is currently waiting to meet with the municipal authorities of Mijas to “discuss future plans and how we are going to go ahead with a slightly more precise schedule".
The Fuengirola-Mijas hospital was originally proposed early this century by the PP party, which took into consideration the need and social outcry from local residents. The then Socialist president of the Junta de Andalucía, Manuel Chaves, promised in a meeting of the PSOE, held in the neighbouring municipality in 2003, that his government would carry out the construction of this necessary health infrastructure.
Despite the significant delay in seeing any further action taken on this proposal, this month’s press conference is certainly a step closer to seeing the crucial hospital built in the key towns.
Aquilino Alonso also clarified that a bid has been accepted for the building of the Estepona hospital, signalling that its construction will begin soon, and unveiling plans for a third hospital in the city of Malaga.
