With over 40 000 hectares of vineyards, Andalucía is the home to numerous amazing wines. Siesta Homes offer properties surrounded by charming bodegas, so why not enjoy it to the fullest? With a mini series of blog posts, we want to introduce you to some of the amazing wineries that Andalucía has to offer.
Sedella vinos (Sedella)
Winemaker Lauren Rosillo has previously produced fine wines in different regions of Spain with his successful winemaking formula Terrior + Technique + Task (TTT). He founded the Sedella winery in 2006 and continued to use the formula when making the amazing Sedella red wine from centenarian Romé and Grenache vines. The winery gets its grapes from the 2.5 hectares of vineyard that is located at an altitude of 2461 feet. The farmers Antonio and Rafael use draft animals, Roman plows and ancient techniques to cultivate the old vines. They know these vines like the back of their own hand and cultivate the vines in an artisan manner on slopes of 45% incline. The winery itself is a modern building, designed by architect Paco Varela and his team. Here, the wines are aged in new French oak barrels. Sedella offers guided visits and wine tasting upon reservation and is located less than two hours away from Marbella. For more information, see their website: http://www.sedellavinos.com/
Bodega Joaquín Fernández (Ronda)
Joaquín Fernández from Córdoba wanted to run his own draft winery, but this wish only came true when he found the perfect area for the winery in Serranía de Ronda. The “Finca Los Frutales” vines is located 3 km north of Ronda, at a 700 m altitude and with slopes of 15% incline. The dream became a reality in 2000 when it was decided to plant four different types of grapes: Merlot, Syrah, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon. He started out with 4,2 hectares, but today Joaquín has 9,2 hectares of vineyards with a production of 60 000 kg of grapes each year, which sums up to 36 000 litres of wine and approximately 50 000 bottles of fantastic rosé and red wine! The winery also has its own self-sustainable ecosystem. There are multiple options on how to visit this amazing place; you can have an experience where you get to see the development of the wines, you can go on a horseback ride through the vineyards, have events in the “Finca Los Frutales” or you can stay in their cottage! This winery is located only an hour away from Marbella and is definitely worth a visit. For more information, visit their website: http://www.bodegajf.es/en
Descalzos Viejos (Ronda)
The headquarters of the amazing winery Descalzos Viejos is located in a 16th century Trinitarian monastery in Ronda, with a garden full of fruit trees and a natural water spring. The building is in the middle of three nature parks and is surrounded by old olive trees and oaks. The winery operates through three farms: Finca Descalzos Viejos, Finca Haza del Batán and Finca Huerto del Mellizo. In these farms they have a variety of grapes, amongst them we can find Cabarnet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnacha, Graciano, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Chardonnay. Due to the characteristics of the winery, they only accept scheduled visits for small groups. This winery is worth a visit for those who love wine and history, as the barrels of wine are actually placed next to the original frescos of the monastery. The winery is located an hour away from Marbella. Want to know more about the amazing history of this place? Visit their website: http://www.descalzosviejos.com/
Bodegas Barbadillo (Sanlucar de Barrameda, Cádiz)
In the town of Sanlucar we find Barbadillo, one of the oldest and largest family owned bodegas in Andalucía. It is most famous for its Manzanilla wine, and is also the location of the Manzanilla Museum. The Barbadillo family settled in Sanlucar in 1821, then launched their first Manzanilla wine to the market in 1827 and The Bodegas Barbadillo Company was established in 1954. With 500 hectares of vineyards and 17 aging wineries, Bodegas Barbadillo is one of Andalucía’s biggest wineries. The variety of grapes they have is Palomino, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Tintilla de Rota. Barbadillo’s Manzanilla Solear was named the world best Manzanilla by Wine Spectator in 2015, the same year as they were named the best winery of the year by Guía Peñín. The bodega is located two and half hour away from Marbella, but with the winery, museum and the beauty of this Spanish city, the trip is absolutely worth it.
