With Christmas now upon us, the Costa del Sol has come alive with Christmas lights and decorations. The annual switching on of the lights in Málaga at the end of November proved spectacular, and it’s not too late to go and witness the daily light and sound shows at 6:30 and 9:30pm every day.
The Christmas markets in towns all along the coast will keep you in the festive spirit. The market in the Boulevard de la Cala, in Mijas is particularly beautiful and it will serve as a brilliant place to find gift ideas for your loved ones. You’ll also find traditional Christmas food and drinks in the stalls. You can try mantecados (butter cookies), pestiños (olive oil pastries) and polvorones (almond cookies).
Christmas is a time of year that children really love and many gathered to enjoy the appearance of Santa Claus in Marbella at the beginning of December. Santa paraded through the historic centre of Marbella on his sleigh accompanied by his reindeer, elves and other helpers. Gifts and sweets were distributed, while children were allowed to take pictures with Santa in his Grotto.
At midnight on the 31st December we part ways with 2017 and welcome a fresh start in 2018, there are numerous hotels along the Costa del Sol offering three course meals and a party for guests to celebrate the turning of the year. Alternatively, you can celebrate in one of the many town squares where many people congregate to count down the arrival of the New Year.
The 5th January gives children the opportunity to see the Three Wise Men emerge on the Costa del Sol, where they will parade the streets and hand out gifts, sweets and joy for all.
