This month saw the first rubbish collection day organised by LIBERA, a collaborative project between the SEO/BirdLife organisation and Ecoembes, an environmental organisation that works in recycling and behaviour change.
It is an important union whose mission it is to rid Spain of rubbish that is not cleaned up and produces a serious environmental impact.
LIBERA launched the "1m2 for Nature" campaign on the 17th of June. During the event, citizens were encouraged to clean up the natural spaces of Spain. The organisers encouraged people to go out to the countryside, to the mountain, to the beach, to the forests, rivers or any green area in order to preserve these natural areas and free them from rubbish that has been thrown there and left abandoned. The organisations highlight the seriousness of these residues on the environment, not only having an effect on the landscape but also having a negative impact on nature.
The idea of the initiative is that if each of Spain’s inhabitants went out on the 17th of June to clean 1m2 of natural space, it would be possible to leave a large area of the country's natural parks rubbish free. The first collection day saw participation by 5000 people and it is hoped that the initiative will continue to grow.
