The United Nations, within the framework of the recent International Tourism Fair (FITUR) held in Madrid, has declared 2017 as the Year of Sustainable Tourism.

The World Tourism Organization (WTO) will promote tourism that will lead to a form of sustainable economic development, contributing to reducing poverty and increasing the quality of life of the local population, protecting the environment, protecting cultural values and diversity.  Their aim is to also promote understanding among peoples, together with peace and security.

During the high season in Spain, a campaign will commence with the slogan 'Travel, enjoy and respect'.

Spain is one of the most important tourist destinations in Europe and continues to experience growth. The goal for Spain this year is to take the opportunity to exploit its potential as a green and rural tourism destination.

Spain’s ecotourism possibilities are enormous. It has the largest biodiversity in Europe and contributes the most to the Natura 2000 network.  2017 will allow Spain to take advantage of its natural wealth with economic benefits whilst ensuring the maintenance and conservation of its natural and cultural heritage.
