Mijas beaches have this year been awarded one of the highest number of Blue Flags along the Costa del Sol. The flags were awarded by Adeac (Association of Environmental Education and Consumer Affairs), member of the international organisation, FEEE (Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe).
"We are lucky because Mijas has been decorated with three blue flags for its beaches. We are very satisfied with the work we have been doing during these two years, certifying each and every one of the requirements that Adeac requests, "said Josele González from Mijas Council.
The blue flag status beaches are La Cala-Torreón, El Bombo and Calahonda Royal Beach. "Last year, Mijas reached a historic milestone by obtaining four Blue Flags on its beaches. The criteria of Adeac to obtain this certificate are quite exhaustive. They are an international recognition of work throughout the year. We are very happy and satisfied again be awarded three Blue Flags on our beaches, "said the councilor.
The Blue Flag is highly sought after for beaches, marinas and tourism operators as an indication of their high environmental and quality standards. The criteria for obtaining the Blue Flag are reviewed and agreed annually on an international level. The requirements that a beach must meet to obtain this distinction are divided into four areas: information and environmental education, water quality, environmental management, and security and services.
In 2018, 45 countries, as diverse as the United Arab Emirates, Mexico and Japan, work to achieve Blue Flag status, with their own NGOs in each country developing the program, together with other environmental education programs. The organisation itself foresees the future expansion of the Blue Flag to other countries, such as the United States, India, Colombia and South Korea.
